Rian’s Journey as a Youngpreneur: Crafting Her Future One Stitch at a Time

At 11 years old, Rian embarked on a journey blending her passion for arts and crafts with entrepreneurial spirit. What started as a simple hobby learned through YouTube tutorials quickly became a burgeoning business known as Rian’s Crochetions.

Rian’s initial projects were modest yet ambitious: a hat and a small bag. These first creations were just the beginning of her exploration into the crochet world. Encouraged by her aunts and eager to support her new hobby, Rian received her first orders. This was a spur-of-the-moment decision driven by her innate curiosity and the prospect of earning money.

The path to mastering crochet was filled with challenges. Rian faced a steep learning curve as she navigated the intricacies of yarn sizes, hook types, tension, and bag lining. Finding suitable designs and tutorials that matched her skill level required patience and perseverance. Despite the initial struggles, she remained undeterred and committed to fulfilling her orders, delivering handcrafted bags that marked the start of her entrepreneurial venture.

Managing time as a youngpreneur is no small feat. During school breaks, Rian dedicated her mornings to essential tasks, reserving her late afternoons for crocheting. However, balancing school, travel, Bible reading and study, ministry, and her business often meant days without crocheting. Despite the difficulties, Rian’s dedication and passion for her craft motivated her.

Rian’s creations have garnered admiration from friends, family, and a growing customer base. Her favorite projects include the heart tote bag, bubble baguette bag, cat hats, and the granny scarf. Each piece reflects her creativity and growing expertise in crochet, showcased proudly on her Facebook page.

Rian’s most significant order to date was quite a milestone. A client requested ten bags and bandana pairs, a considerable achievement in her young entrepreneurial journey. The whole story can be found on her Facebook page.

Rian’s journey into entrepreneurship is not just about creating beautiful crochet items. Traveling home from volunteering with her family, Rian often sits in the front passenger seat to converse with her father and keep him awake. These car rides become impromptu business lessons, during which she asks about starting a business, management, labor costs, dealing with suppliers, and basic accounting. Her father, a university lecturer and business consultant, provides invaluable advice, offering Rian free consulting services she regularly utilizes for her business.

When asked about her plans, Rian remains pragmatic. While she currently enjoys running her business, she is realistic about the need for a sustainable career as she grows older to support her future volunteering plans. She acknowledges that crocheting might not be a long-term occupation but values the lessons and experiences it provides. For now, Rian relishes being her own boss and aims to learn as much as possible to apply these skills in her future endeavors.

Rian’s ultimate goal extends beyond her achievements. She aims to inspire other young individuals to embrace their talents and pursue entrepreneurship from an early age. Through Rian’s Crochetions, she hopes to ignite a wave of creativity and business acumen among the youth, fostering a brighter and more innovative future.

Rian’s journey as a youngpreneur is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and the endless possibilities that come with embracing one’s talents given by the creator. As she continues to prepare for her future volunteering career, one stitch at a time, Rian stands as an inspiring figure for aspiring young entrepreneurs everywhere.
